Roger Reynolds, the founder of the nursery, was by trade a printer in San Francisco. However, when he became allergic to printers ink he realized that he needed to move on to a career where he would have lots of fresh air and exercise.
He found 15 acres of beautiful virgin land in Menlo Park and established Roger Reynolds Nursery in 1919, the oldest nursery on the Peninsula. Not all the property was used for the business. He turned the redwood grove, which was much bigger then, into a park that had barbecues, picnic tables, a dance floor and even a jukebox! He rented the park to various organizations that wanted "a day in the country."
The nursery survived the great depression and the war. Over the years bits and pieces of the property were sold and eventually leased, including the Victorian cottage, used as a guest house for the family. Today the nursery is on 2.5 acres and the Victorian cottage is the Carriage Stop, an indoor plant and gift shop. The nursery still has a part of the beautiful redwood grove, where one can feel the spirit of the place 85 years ago.
The current owner, Sally Halstead is Roger Reynolds's grand-daughter. Born and raised in Hawaii, she moved to California in 1975 with her young son to join her mother and brother in running the nursery. Eventually she bought the nursery and started her new adventure as sole owner of Roger Reynolds. Ms. Halstead has insisted on providing only the very best quality in product and service. This is a legacy that carries over from when her grandfather was the owner of the nursery. She is proud of how beautiful the nursery is and wants customers to enjoy the garden, redwood grove, and the two stores.
